Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be an experienced athlete to work with a coach?
No. Triathlon, run, and swim coaching are perfect for athletes of all levels. Whether you're just starting out, looking to improve your performance, aiming for big goals, or seeking a breakthrough, I will create a personalized plan to help you reach your aspirations.
What types of triathlons and run races do you provide coaching for?
I coach athletes for all triathlon distances, including Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman, and Ironman, as well as races ranging from 5K to full marathons. Whether you're new to the sport or preparing for a specific event, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
How does the coaching process work?
To get started, you’ll complete an Athlete Intake Questionnaire. After I review your responses, we’ll arrange a virtual or phone consultation. From there, I’ll create a personalized training plan tailored to your fitness level, goals, and schedule. Each week, your plan will be uploaded to TrainingPeaks, a virtual platform. Throughout your journey, I’ll be there to offer continuous support, provide feedback, make adjustments, and keep you motivated. I believe in working together and value your input to ensure your training is both enjoyable and effective.
How does a run training plan differ from a triathlon training plan?
A run training plan focuses on improving running performance with workouts like long runs, speed intervals, and recovery runs, along with some strength training to prevent injuries and improve form. A triathlon training plan, however, balances running, cycling, and swimming, with dedicated sessions for each sport, brick workouts for practicing transitions, and strength training to build overall endurance and prevent muscle imbalances. Triathlon plans also incorporate race-specific strategies for all three sports, along with managing energy and transitions during the event.
Do I need to train every day?
Training schedules are customized based on your goals, experience, and the distance you're preparing for. For example, a triathlon plan will usually combine swimming, biking, running, strength training, and rest days to ensure optimal recovery. Ultimately, your schedule determines the structure of your training plan!
How would coaching align with a busy schedule?
I understand that life can get hectic, so I customize your training plan to fit around your schedule. Flexibility is key, and I’ll help you stay on track while balancing your other commitments.
How do we track my progress?
We track your progress using performance metrics like heart rate, rate of perceived exertion, and pacing, along with regular assessments. Your training data is logged on TrainingPeaks, allowing me to monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. I also provide ongoing feedback, helping you improve your technique, pacing, and endurance as you continue to progress.
Do I need specialized equipment to train for a triathlon?
While you don't need specialized equipment to get started, there are a few key items that can help you train effectively for a triathlon. A good pair of running shoes, a bike and helmet, and a swimsuit, cap and goggles are the basics. As you progress, you may want to invest in a road or triathlon bike, a wetsuit for open-water swimming, a heart rate monitor or GPS watch to track your performance, and a race belt for transitions. However, we can tailor your training plan to work with whatever equipment you have, and I’ll help you make decisions on what to prioritize as you move forward.
How long before a race should I start training?
I recommend starting your training at least 6 months before your race, but this depends on your current fitness level and race distance. As your coach, I will help determine the ideal time frame based on your goals.
What if I can't fit in a scheduled coaching session?
I understand that unexpected things can come up! If you can't fit in a scheduled session, just let me know. I can adjust your training plan to accommodate changes due to other commitments, injury, illness, vacation, or anything else. Communication is key, and I’ll work with you to help you stay on track despite any obstacles that arise.
